Fall 2013 / MLO 1
This class fulfills my MLO through the study of advanced Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and demonstration of understanding through presentations. The class utilized the text book called "The Door to Advanced Level Japanese" 「上級へのとびら」。The book not only provided me with comprehensive information about the language, but also integrated the new information into cultural information that included geography, speech styles, sports, religion, education and history. The content that was studied deepened my language and cultural understanding at the same time.
At the end of each chapter, we were assessed through our presentational skills. Not only did we develop our Power Points in Japanese, but we also demonstrated and improved our speaking through the presentation. The class's final assignment was to do a major presentation on one of the cultural topics in the book: I chose history. My presentation was on Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who is considered one of Japan's most famous Shoguns. You can view my Power Point by clicking the link below.

I realized that even after living in Japan and studying in this Advanced Japanese class, my development and proficiency of the Japanese language will need to continue. I've realized that while I have studied Japanese for only five-and-a-half years, I've realized that language study and development is a long-term commitment in order to become fluent and capable.
I will continue my studies and attempt to pass the JLPT 1 and 2. Once out of college, the only official indicators of fluency will come from my abilities to use them in a job or to pass the JLPT, which is the globally accepted proof of fluency.
