This course introduces students to the majors in Japanese Language and Culture, Spanish or World Language and Cultures. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs. Students identify and work with a major advisor to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, including graduate education and teaching credential preparation. (Offered fall semester.)
Fall 2013 / University Wide Required Course
The first and primary focus of the class talked about the classes that both Japanese and Spanish Majors needed to complete in order to fulfill the MLO outcomes, which are the requirements in order to graduate. Talks also included information about forecasting when students would take the classes, study abroad, and then senior year. Since this class was for both Spanish and Japanese Language and Culture majors, the class was headed by Dr. Saito-Abbott and Dr. Urioste. The class, while it focuses on anticipating and planning the next two years, has been designed for those who are fully decided on being Language and Culture majors.
This course was focused on not only going over the MLOs, but also went over potential choices post-graduation. There were occasional speakers who came to the class to provide additional information to the students and options. Such options included graduate school, careers in linguistics, careers in teaching, and resume building. While these lectures were informational, I realized that I really did want to leave college and start working and building myself a career. It was informational and helpful to understand the process of entering graduate school, but I’ve decided to begin working and look for employment. The class also provided a speaker who worked with us for about two hours on resume building and cover letter discussions. The information and handouts provided has been useful in my own use as I’ve used it while applying for jobs.
