JAPN 404 - Advanced Presentational Communication
You can see the results and proof of work in the Capstone Project tab above or samples below.
My completion of this MLO came from the completion of my year-long Capstone project. I utilized technology resources including Power Point, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Excel. Power point was utilized in both Japanese and English to present my findings and data. I utilized Google Drive as the media for sharing data between me and my advisers. Google Docs, a feature within Google Drive, was used during my survey period, in which I created two sets of surveys in English and Japanese. I then distributed the survey and used the feature to gather my data to put into Excel. Excel was then used to create the graphs and charts I utilized in my paper and presentation. All of these resources were used during Japn 400 and Japn 404.
J400 - Adv Interpersonal Communication: This course provided me with the beginning tools and methods to start my research and development into my Senior Thesis Project. I worked with and was advised by Dr. Saito-Abbott and Dr. Takahashi. My topic for my research started as ‘success between the US and Japan’, but evolved into ‘Cultural Projections of Career and Success: Individualism and Collectivism’.
Participating in this class, while mandatory as a Japanese Language and Culture major, has shown me how much time it takes for research and development to come to fruition. Finding relevant articles, books, and data was the first task. Then, time had to be taken to read and determine if the information was relevant to my research or not. Once I had done that, and obtained the required amount of qualitative information, it was put together into a ‘Review of Literature’ format.
J404 - Advanced Presentational Communication: This class fulfills my MLO through its focus on Power Point Development and study of formal Japanese. The class would periodically have each other present their updated power points and the teacher would comment and point out what was right and wrong about the power point's layout and information. In order to write a proper formal Japanese research paper, we have been using a packet weekly that contained information pertinant to the overall capstone project.
You can see the final results of my Power Point Development in the Capstone Project section. As for formal Japanese acquisition, we were assigned to do homework from a packet that provided examples and explanations about the difference and use of formal Japanese and casual Japanese.
I have come to understand that the diversity of Japanese language based on situational factors has a drastic change on the words to be properly used is very concise. For example, there's a difference in how someone would write a letter to a friend, a newspaper article, and research paper. The level of casualty goes from being short and simple into the use of more complex words and Kanji.
