JAPN 400 - Advanced Japanese for Interpersonal Communication
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in interpersonal communication through the formulation of research questions and conducting research utilizing appropriate technologies. Taught in Japanese.
Fall 2013 / MLO 4
This course provided me with the beginning tools and methods to start my research and development into my Senior Thesis Project. I worked with and was advised by Dr. Saito-Abbott and Dr. Takahashi. My topic for my research started as ‘success between the US and Japan’, but evolved into ‘Cultural Projections of Career and Success: A Comparative Study between the US and Japan’.
Participating in this class, while mandatory as a Japanese Language and Culture major, has shown me how much time it takes for research and development to come to fruition. Finding relevant articles, books, and data was the first task. Then, time had to be taken to read and determine if the information was relevant to my research or not. Once I had done that, and obtained the required amount of qualitative information, it was put together into a ‘Review of Literature’ format.
From the research, data, and facts that I had obtained, I was to start developing a survey that would be developed and used in the next semester to gather more information to be used in my research. Once again, development of the survey was just as long due to the need to create questions that were not only relevant, but also properly structured.
Creating the layout for the survey took time and even needed to be developed during the winter break time that was allocated to us. Survey development during this time focused on the target demographics were. It was necessary to have a target age range, nationality, and stage in life. The development of my research was decided to be focused on college students, so not only did I need to start thinking of who to hand my questions out to, but also again developed the questions around these factors.
