SPAN 325 - Fall 2013
SPAN 325 contributed to fulfilling my MLO through the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian content that was in the films that we watched. The goal of MLO 3 was to have me study another culture besides the one that my major focuses on and has me reflect on all three cultures, Japanese, Hispanic, and American.
The films that we watched all varied in not only genre, but also locatoin. I was able to view and gain knowledge about culture from Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. After watching the films, we were required to write a reflective journal about them. The goal was to look at and reflect on my own culture as compared to the culture that was shown in the movie. There were two journals that were made during the course of the Term, and can be seen and downloaded by the link provided. Also, the final project for the class I created was a movie that was a parody of the films I viewed in class. The choice to make a parody was based off of how certain filmmakers that we studied used this style. The film making process also showed me how much time and effort is put into a film. It took 3 days of work to produce something that was 10 minutes long. another good learning lesson.
I learned from this class that the 'Hispanic' culture is more diverse than just one identity or concept. Through these films, I have been able to see how the Hispanic world is much more diversified and unique in each country that was presented to us in the class. There are people that may classify people just as 'Asian' or 'Hispanic', but through this class, I have realized that its a broad and general term that doesn't fully represent someone's identity or beliefs. Just like how someone may classify me as a 'Westerner' or 'American', the region I am from and lived in is different than the stereotypical identities that have been portrayed or kept alive.
Not only do I want to continue my interest in Hispanic cultures, but I also want to keep my ears, eyes, and mind open for other cultures. There is much more to the world than I could imagine, and much more to discover and explore. After college, I want to find a way to live and explore different countries. My interest about the different cultures and people in this world intrigues me.
